With a new agreement with Spanish train manufacturer CAF for 25 new regional trains, SJ has decided to invest up to SEK 19 billion in a short period of time.
The investment in new regional trains is part of SJ's investment of up to SEK 19 billion in new and refurbished trains. The current deal for 25 new regional trains represents approximately three billion.
The new trains from Spanish CAF will have room for many passengers, are adapted to the Swedish climate and designed for easy boarding, which is especially convenient for people with disabilities. Some spaces are intended for storing bicycles, strollers and luggage. It will be convenient to work on board the train, including with reliable connectivity. The trains are fast, with a top speed of 200 km/h.
– It is fantastic that we have now also reached this agreement for new regional trains. Our upgrade of the X2000 fleet is in full swing and we currently have four fully upgraded trains in service and more will follow. In April, we signed an agreement for at least 25 new fast trains and now we are delighted with this agreement, which will allow us to offer really good, comfortable and climate-smart regional travel in the future, says SJ's Director of Vehicles Arvid Fredman.
The new regional trains will be equipped with connected technical systems that create the conditions for so-called condition-based maintenance. This means that the train continuously sends signals that are analyzed and evaluated in SJ's workshops where the automatically planned maintenance measures are carried out. This leads to more efficient maintenance that gives passengers even more reliable trains.
– We will therefore have trains that will tell you in advance that a component is about to break down and needs to be replaced. This can then be done in a simpler and faster way and workshop time is reduced, which is good for both SJ and our customers, says Arvid Fredman.
A major focus is on offering SJ's customers a really high level of comfort. Among other things, there will be dynamic lighting that can be adjusted according to the time of day or weather. Heat and light can be adjusted based on conditions such as the number of passengers and the environment the train passes through.
– We are putting a lot of effort into a comfortable chair that is pleasant to sit in even for a little longer than an average regional train journey. The train will also be equipped with 5G technology and radio-transparent windows that offer fast connectivity. It will be so efficient that all customers can work and stream with multiple devices at the same time, says Arvid Fredman.
The new regional trains will operate on the lines Stockholm-Västerås-Örebro-Skövde-Gothenburg, Stockholm-Uppsala, Linköping-Norrköping-Stockholm-Arlanda-Uppsala-Gävle-Ljusdal and Kalmar-Gothenburg where they will replace today's locomotive trains. The new trains are expected to be put into service in 2026.
