Since last autumn, SJ's own train driver school has been in full swing in Stockholm. Now, the opportunities for paid train driver training are expanding, with courses being held in both Stockholm and Gothenburg.
In the autumn of 2022, SJ started its own train driver training. There was great interest and two training rounds were able to start before Christmas, and two more rounds will start in the new year. The initiative continues, and the application period for the new training rounds that will start after the summer of 2023 has now started.
SJ is planning a training course that will start in early August in Stockholm/Hagalund and a training course that will start in early September in Gothenburg. After passing the train driver exam, students will be offered permanent employment in the location where the training has been completed (students in Gothenburg are offered employment in Gothenburg or Linköping).
Working as a train driver is suitable for those who like technology and service in combination, and who have a high level of safety awareness. The training lasts 41 weeks and includes both theoretical and practical elements. Among other things, it includes courses in railway technology, safety, the environment and infrastructure. The unique thing about SJ's train driver training is that it already provides qualifications for at least two of SJ's vehicle types during the basic training, which means that students can start driving trains on their own immediately after passing the exam and receiving a train driver's license.
– It has been a lot of fun following the train driver students who started in the autumn, they say that it is both intense, exciting and a lot to learn. At the same time, they are looking forward to driving trains on their own and to starting working for real. We have very talented teachers, instructors and driving instructors within SJ and that makes it easy to enjoy and feel safe as a student with us, says SJ's press manager Tobbe Lundell.
The application deadline for SJ's train driver training is February 10th.
