A train with up to 70 people on board has derailed along the Norwegian Nordland Line, where traffic is operated by SJ.

One person is reported to have died and the situation at the scene of the accident is "unclear," according to the rescue services.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Thursday, the emergency services were alerted to a derailed train south of Mo i Rana.

According to the police, the locomotive and five carriages have derailed, but even in the late afternoon, the emergency services do not have a full overview of the incident.

”"It is an unmanageable situation and we have no control over the extent of the damage," says Snorre Nicolaisen at Helgeland Hospital in Mo i Rana, who has been promoted to staff level.

Police say one person has died and several others have been injured. However, the extent of the damage is unclear, according to several Norwegian media outlets.

Rescue services from Bodø and Brønnøysund are on site, but their work is made more difficult by the train's position on a steep slope, according to VG.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but according to police, the likely cause is a rock slide across the tracks.

The Nordlandsbanan railway runs between Trondheim and Bodø in Northern Norway and is operated by the Norwegian subsidiary of the Swedish state-owned train operator SJ. The section between Bjerka and Mo i Rana is reported to be closed as a result of the derailment. The E6 is also closed near the accident site.
