Several charitable organizations have jointly opened a welcome center at Skavsta Airport for Ukrainian refugees.

– It could be that you get a cup of coffee and someone to talk to, says Robert Karlsson, communications manager at Skavsta Airport.

The Border Police and the Swedish Migration Board are also on site.

Since Wednesday, Save the Children, the Red Cross, the Church of Sweden and the Catholic aid organization Caritas, with support from the county administrative board, Nyköping Municipality and the airport, have been operating the welcome center that provides humanitarian support at the airport.

– We have volunteers who speak Ukrainian who help with the language, but we are also there for the refugees while the Swedish Migration Board arranges accommodation, says George Joseph, Secretary General at Caritas Sweden.

However, Caritas is looking for more volunteers who speak Ukrainian or Russian and encourages people to contact them.

The Swedish Migration Board works together with the border police at the airport where passport controls have been introduced for flights from Poland – even though it is within the Schengen area.

– The authorities are there for Ukrainians seeking asylum, even though many come in as tourists, says Robert Karlsson.
