The sports holiday is the most expensive week of the year for many families with children. A new review from the comparison service Zmarta/uScore shows that ski trips are now taking up an increasingly large portion of household income. This is hitting families with children outside the big cities hardest, who pay the price when Stockholm has sports holidays.
This year, an average ski trip during the sports holidays costs just over 33,000 kronor for a family of two adults and two children. The price includes accommodation in a cabin or apartment, lift pass and ski rental. The prices are based on an average from five of the country's largest ski resorts.
The ski trip thus constitutes over half of the family's monthly income (52%). Six years ago, in 2020, the corresponding week cost around 7,500 SEK less and then constituted only 39 percent of the household income, according to calculations by the comparison service Zmarta.
– The same ski holiday today takes up a significantly larger share of the household's finances. Wages simply have not kept up with the rise in prices. says Ola Söderlind, household economist at Zmarta/uScore.
Big differences between sports break weeks
At the same time, prices differ significantly between the sports holiday weeks. Week 9, when Stockholm County, among others, has sports holidays, is the most expensive with an average price of almost SEK 35,900. Week 8 is just below, while week 10 is clearly the cheapest, with an average cost of around SEK 29,700 for the same type of trip.
– The sports holiday acts as a price spiral. When demand peaks, prices are pushed up, and this happens regardless of where the family lives. But it is often possible to find cheaper alternatives during the same sports holiday week, so it is important to take the time to compare, says Ola Söderlind at Zmarta/uScore.
The areas most affected
However, the amount of income lost on a ski trip varies greatly between different parts of the country. In Gävleborg County, which has a sports holiday the same week as Stockholm, the cost corresponds to around 58 percent of the household's combined monthly income after tax. Kalmar, Gotland and Jönköping counties also rank high, at around 57 percent.
At the other end of the scale is Stockholm County, which has a sports holiday in week 9. There, the ski trip corresponds to around 44 percent of household income. Norrbotten, Västerbotten and Västernorrland also end up high on the list, with around 45 percent of household income.
– When several counties face the highest prices for sports holidays without having the same salary levels as Stockholm, the ski trip becomes significantly more taxing on the household economy, says Ola Söderlind at Zmarta/uScore.

Zmarta has calculated the cost of an average ski trip during the sports holiday for a family with two adults and two children aged 10 and 13. The cost includes accommodation in a cabin/apartment for six nights, lift passes and ski rental, and lunch on the slopes. Round-trip travel costs by car are also included in the calculation. The price is based on an average from five large ski resorts: Åre, Sälen, Idre, Vemdalen and Funäsfjällen. The travel cost has been calculated based on a standard price per kilometer, with Funäsfjällen as the common reference location. In order to compare developments over time, the cost of the ski trip has been adjusted for inflation using Statistics Sweden's consumer price index. The cost has then been compared to the median income after tax for households living together with children aged 0–19. The income data comes from Statistics Sweden.
