The warmest temperature was in Oskarshamn in Småland, where the thermometer showed 12.1 degrees on January 15 – the highest January temperature ever measured in Sweden.
Oskarshamn also set a new record for the highest daily average temperature for January, 10.6 degrees. This is above what SMHI defines as a summer temperature – the limit is 10 degrees.
– The reason is that we have had a weather pattern with a lot of westerly and southwesterly winds that have brought warm air up over the country. That is actually normal for us, but now it has happened for an unusually long time, says Charlotta Eriksson at SMHI.
Over the entire month, temperatures were above normal at all of SMHI's measuring stations. In central Norrland, the temperature deviated the most, over 10 degrees more than normal. The heat was least noticeable at the top and bottom of the country, and on Öland and Gotland, where temperatures were 5–6 degrees above average.
The highest monthly average temperature – another Swedish January record – was measured at Måseskär and Väderöarna in Bohuslän. There, the thermometer averaged 6.2 degrees.
