The British Isles, usually known for rain, are experiencing cold and heavy snowfall. 

The warmest temperature this morning – minus 9.3 – was recorded in Braemar, Scotland. It has not been this cold in the country since December 2010, the national weather service Met Office reports. 

The weather has caused chaos on the roads. During the day, the emergency services have received eight emergency calls per minute. Approximately 9,000 motorists have called the RAC, the equivalent of Motormännen, for help, writes Sky News.

In the village of Burwash, 40 stranded motorists were forced to seek shelter for the night in a local pub, writes The Telegraph.

“People who had never met before huddled together and helped each other. It was lovely to see,” says bar owner Pauline Wilson.

Flights and trains have been affected by delays and cancellations.

The country's public health authority urges residents to wear "multiple layers" of clothing.
