The space project Virgin Orbit, founded by British billionaire Richard Branson, is shutting down operations.

The announcement comes just months after a failed attempt to launch a rocket into orbit, the first ever from the UK, earlier in January.

Virgin Orbit's goal was to provide space launch services for the growing small satellite market. The company's method involved launching mini-rockets from a modified Boeing aircraft while the aircraft was in the air.
