Spain is extending the current state of emergency due to the coronavirus crisis for another two weeks starting Sunday. This will give the government continued control over citizens' movement patterns while gradually reopening the country.

The decision was made in parliament on Wednesday after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who leads the country's fragile coalition government, managed to gather enough support in parliament.

In hard-hit Spain, more than 25,000 people have died as a result of the coronavirus, according to the country's official statistics.
