The sport holiday is one of the year's major travel periods, and this year Spain was the obvious favourite. The travel agency Ticket's booking statistics show a clear trend where Europe dominated Swedes' choices, while Thailand climbed and the USA lost ground.
Swedes' interest in travel remained at a high level, and according to travel agency Ticket's latest booking statistics, the number of bookings increased by a total of 4 percent during the ski holiday period. It was a mix of big cities and sun-and-beach destinations that attracted ski holiday travellers, reflecting a broad demand for both relaxation and experiences.
Spain retained its position as the most popular holiday destination. More than three times as many Swedes chose Spain compared to Thailand, which came in second and saw bookings increase by 12 per cent compared to last year. The country also has two places on Ticket's top list of the most booked destinations for the ski holidays – Bangkok and Phuket.
However, one country that lost popularity was the USA – the number of bookings fell by 25 percent compared to the sports holidays last year.
The reduced demand for travel to the US is likely due to a combination of the political situation and the weak Swedish krona. However, we view the US as a continued attractive destination and believe that travel there will gradually increase again, says Tiyoneh Jah, PR & Communications Manager at Ticket.
