Large parts of the bankrupt charter giant Thomas Cook's Belgian operations have been saved, according to the country's public service channel VRT.

The buyer is the Spanish company Wamos Group – which plans to reopen the travel agencies as early as next week.

The Spanish group Wamos Group is taking over 62 of the 91 Thomas Cook travel agencies, which operate under the Neckermann brand, in Belgium. The company also expects to rehire 200 of the 500 people who have worked for Thomas Cook's Belgian operations.

According to those who have negotiated with the buyer, it is a "success that has exceeded expectations" that two-thirds of the travel agencies are now being saved. The stores will reopen under the same name as before next week.

Wamos operates mainly in Spain and Portugal and also has its own airline, Wamos Air.

The parent company Thomas Cook went bankrupt almost three weeks ago, and shortly afterwards the Belgian operation was declared bankrupt and the company was unable to pay its employees their September salaries.

Earlier on Friday, there was also information that a first bid for Thomas Cook's Nordic part, which includes the Swedish Ving, has been received. According to Ving's communications manager, there are several interested parties.

”"We expect a fairly quick sales process," he told TT earlier on Friday.
