The number of Danish passengers on Stena Line's ferries between Fredrikshamn and Gothenburg increased by 19 percent during June–August compared to last summer. July accounted for the largest increase, with 26 percent more Danish passengers than the same month in 2025.
July was also the summer month when Stena Line had the most Danish passengers on the route between Fredrikshamn and Gothenburg.
The shipping company links the development to Gothenburg's range of events, culture and shopping, among other things.
– Danes continue to come to Gothenburg. The wide range of concerts, events, food, culture and shopping continues to attract our neighbors, says Ulf Staaf, Travel Commercial Manager at Stena Line.
Gothia Cup and Partille Cup contributed
Stena Line also points to the Gothia Cup and Partille Cup as contributing factors to this summer's travel.
According to the company, just over 400 teams from Denmark and Germany participated in the two tournaments, and many of the teams traveled by ferry to Gothenburg.
The broader visitor statistics also show an increase in Danish visitors. According to the figures referred to by Stena Line, the number of Danish visitors to the Gothenburg region increased by 19 percent during June and July compared to the corresponding period in 2025.
These statistics therefore refer to visitors in the Gothenburg region and should be distinguished from Stena Line's own passenger increase of 19 percent for the entire period June–August.
Expecting impact from Oceana
Stena Line expects that new tourist destinations in Gothenburg can contribute to continued passenger growth. The company points to Liseberg's new swimming facility Oceana, which according to the documentation will open in January 2027.
The shipping company also collaborates with, among others, the Gothenburg Opera and Nordstan regarding the tourism industry.
The ferry terminals are moving to Arendal
In the longer term, Stena Line's infrastructure in Gothenburg will also change.
The terminals for Danish traffic at Masthuggskajen and German traffic at Majnabbe are planned to move to Arendal. According to Stena Line, the move is currently planned for 2031.
The company states that it is working with the city and region on transportation solutions for walking passengers to and from the new terminal.
