The Swedish Tourist Association limits the number of visitors along the most popular hiking trails in the Jämtland Mountains, due to excessive pressure.
”"We will change the food selection, reduce the number of beds, change the opening hours and close a cabin site. We are doing this to reduce disturbance to the reindeer and contribute to sustainable development of the area," STF writes in a press release.
They also write that they "take responsibility by taking a step back" for sustainable outdoor living.
The season at several mountain huts and mountain stations will be shortened and the Gåsen mountain hut will close and one of the houses will be transferred to the Handösdalen Sámi village.
Cabins and stations affected
The cabins that are located "without a passable road" will close during the winter when the snowmobile ban comes into effect in April and will not open until July 1, however, the Sylarna mountain station will not open until July 15. The cabins and stations affected are: Sylarna, Blåhammaren, Helags, Vålåstugan, Stensdalen, Anaris, Lunndörren and Fältjägaren.
The Storulvån mountain station will not be affected as STF owns the land. An application will be submitted later in the autumn for the Skedbro and Rogen mountain cabins in southern Härjedalen.
At several stations, the number of beds is being reduced and parts of the operations are being discontinued, this applies to the stations and cabins below.
- The Goose Mountain Cottage
Closed and one of the houses is written over at Handölsdalen's Sami village.
- Blåhammaren mountain station
The number of beds will be halved to a total of 30 and the restaurant will be closed. The shop will remain. By closing the restaurant, STF believes that fewer hikers will seek out the area.
- Sylarna Mountain Station
At Sylarna, the number of beds will be reduced by 25 percent and the restaurant will be closed by 2028 at the latest. The shop will remain.
- Helags Mountain Station
Will close its restaurant by 2028 but will keep its store.
