Starting Monday, all gatherings other than religious ones and protests will be banned in the US's second largest city, Los Angeles, in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
”Under the new rules that go into effect Monday, residents are urged to stay home as much as possible,” a statement said. The ban, which applies to all of Los Angeles County, will remain in effect for at least three weeks, according to local health officials.
”All public and private gatherings of individuals not in the same household are prohibited, except for faith-based services and protests, which are constitutionally protected rights.”
Last week, a nighttime curfew was imposed in large parts of the state of California.
More than 7,600 residents of Los Angeles County have lost their lives to COVID-19. That's more than a third of all coronavirus deaths in the state. The new restrictions are not as extensive as those that were in place in Los Angeles last spring. For example, schools are allowed to remain open if there is no coronavirus outbreak.
