A storm has swept across the Netherlands, forcing Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, one of Europe's largest transport hubs, to cancel over 300 departures on Wednesday - including several to Sweden.

Storm Poly hit the Dutch coast on Wednesday morning, reaching hurricane force in some gusts. The country's meteorological institute has issued a red warning, the highest alert level, for much of the country and authorities have urged people to stay indoors.

The storm is also causing serious disruption to air and rail traffic. At Schiphol Airport outside the capital Amsterdam, which is one of Europe's largest, more than 300 flights have been cancelled on Wednesday. Traffic is expected to be limited at least until 3 p.m. this afternoon, writes Reuters.

Several flights to and from both Stockholm and Gothenburg have been canceled, according to the airport's website. Departures to Copenhagen have also been canceled.
