Do you feel like the urge to pack your bag with sunscreen and swimwear is decreasing as the temperature here at home rises?
Then you're far from alone. The nice weather is contributing to record-breaking cheap trips to the Mediterranean right now.
– I have never seen such low levels before, it is exceptionally cheap, says Katarina Daniels, PR and communications manager at the travel agency Ticket.
For those who have the opportunity to travel in the coming weeks, a week's trip with flights and hotels to classic charter destinations such as Mallorca, Crete and Alanya can be found for between 1,500-2,000 SEK. With real luck, it is even possible to find bargains for under a thousand kronor.
Not uncommon in May
It's not entirely unusual that it's very cheap in May. The Whitsun weekend followed by school graduations means that many people don't want to or can't travel during this time - prices drop then. But the lasting summer weather outside the windows, which started early this year, also has an impact.
– If it is rainy and cold like last year in May, it is clear that more people will choose to go away. Especially those who can go at short notice, those who have stopped working or have a good economy, says Barbro Holmberg, information officer at the tour operator Ving.
For trips after school ends, different prices usually apply. But the majority of summer trips are already sold. Both Ving and competitor TUI have sold around ten percent more so far this year than compared to the same period last year.
Again, the weather may have played a role.
– When it was as bad as last summer, you want to be safe and sun-protect yourself for at least one or two weeks of the summer. Then you book well in advance. Most people have learned that if the weather is bad when you want to go, you won't find cheap trips, says Barbro Holmberg.
Booked early
Erik Karlsson at TUI's press desk agrees:
– Since last summer there was no direct heat in Sweden, we got the impression that many people booked quite early for next summer or even a winter trip that they had not planned from the beginning, he says.
Katarina Daniels at Ticket, which sells travel from several companies, says that there has been a lot of talk about records in the industry in the past year.
– After a certain stabilization during the winter with a shaky housing market and general unrest in the stock market, that has now changed. It is absolutely a clear increase from last year, from already record levels, it should be added, she says.
