On Wednesday, Terminal 4 opened, which is intended to relieve the queues at Terminal 5 at Arlanda.
It has helped, even though there have been occasional long queues, according to Swedavia.
At 7am on Wednesday morning, Terminal 5 was still crowded, with lines of around 45 to 60 minutes at security checkpoints.
– There is still high travel pressure and it is noticeable, said Peter Wärring, press officer at Swedavia, during the morning.
The idea is that the opening of Terminal 4 will reduce congestion and queues. The corridors between the terminals are open, which frees up more space for travelers to spend time.
”Of course relieved”
Late in the afternoon, Peter Wärring says that around 25 flights that would otherwise have departed from Terminal 5 departed from Terminal 4 on Wednesday.
– It has of course eased the load, as we have opened check-in and security at Terminal 4 as well.
Swedavia has strengthened its staffing and more are on the way, which also applies to the security company Avarn, which is responsible for Arlanda's staffing in security checks, according to Wärring.
– It has contributed to the fact that it has relieved the pressure, there have been fewer queues than before. So the fact that we opened today has relieved the pressure. Periodically there have still been some long queues, but there is generally a lot of pressure, and that is why we are taking these measures.
Check with the airline.
A new feature with the opening of Terminal 4 is that those traveling with only hand luggage can use the security checkpoint in Terminal 4 instead of the one in Terminal 5.
– We still encourage travelers to check with the airline what applies and when check-in and baggage drop-off opens. It is usually about two to three hours before departure, says Peter Wärring.
– To further shorten the queue time at security, you can consider taking off your jacket and picking up your computer and hydration bags from your hand luggage in advance.
