Swedes are travelling as before – almost at least. In January this year, the number of passengers at Swedavia's airports increased by 90 percent compared to the same period last year and is now at 75 percent of the pre-pandemic 2019 level.
2.1 million travellers travelled via one of Swedavia's ten airports in Sweden during the first month of the year. More travellers went through Arlanda alone (1.4 million) than the total number who travelled in January 2022.
”For the coming months, the uncertainty remains significant, but we still expect a travel-intensive summer and are preparing accordingly,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, President and CEO of Swedavia, in a press release.
At Arlanda, the situation in the security control has been strained and long queues have been a problem in the latter part of the pandemic. As more travellers arrive at the airport, preparations need to be made.
”At Arlanda, this means that Terminal 2 will also have non-Schengen traffic by the summer for the first time since the start of the pandemic. At the same time, intensive preparatory work is underway for the opening of the new, modern security checkpoint and marketplace in Terminal 5 later this year,” says Jonas Abrahamsson.
