As of March 20, Swedavia's annual and sustainability report for 2023 is available on the company's website. In 2023, aviation continued to recover from the low traffic volumes of previous years, with new and old airlines returning to the airports and the majority of all flight routes and destinations restored. During the year, Swedavia continued to take new steps in the airports' transition to fossil-free aviation and in December, together with Gothenburg Landvetter Airport and Malmö Airport, became one of five airport operators in the world to be certified at the fifth and currently highest level according to the industry's international industry standard, Airport Carbon Accreditation.

– Long distances should never be an obstacle for people to meet. Flying connects people, unites friends and family and makes it possible to share ideas, experiences and take part in new impressions from all corners of the world. Thus, flying contributes to increased understanding of people from other cultures and religions like no other form of transport and it is no exaggeration to say that flying thereby improves the conditions for an existence without war and unrest. Flying is simply needed to satisfy people's need to meet and we see that this need remains strong when we sum up 2023, writes Swedavia's President and CEO, Jonas Abrahamsson, in his CEO's words.

Over the past year, Swedavia has continued to take important steps to accelerate aviation's climate transition work, and the latest brand survey shows that more and more people associate Swedavia with sustainability. In December 2023, Swedavia became one of five airport operators in the world certified at the fifth and currently highest level, with Swedavia's second and third largest airports, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport and Malmö Airport. Level five includes requirements for zero emissions of fossil carbon dioxide. Seven of the company's ten airports are certified at the second highest rating, ACA4+, according to the international industry standard for airports' climate transition work, Airport Carbon Accreditation.

– In 2023 and also in 2024, we have continued to collaborate with our customers and partners for fossil-free aviation. This year will be the fifth year in a row that we have implemented our incentive program for increased use of sustainable aviation fuel. The program means that Swedavia will reimburse up to half of the cost of refueling with sustainable aviation fuel. As in 2023, this year's program contains a pot of SEK 40 million, which is a doubling compared to 2022. Since the start in 2020, the program has involved a total investment of SEK 100 million, says Jonas Abrahamsson.

Arlanda is the hub of Sweden's basic range of airports and plays an important role in connecting Sweden and Sweden with the world.

– Over the past year, Swedavia has successfully launched a new state-of-the-art security checkpoint at Arlanda, the hub of Sweden’s basic range of airports. The investment has paid off. In December, the average waiting time to pass through security was two minutes. This has contributed to a significantly improved passenger experience and is an important step in Arlanda’s continued development. But more than that is required to improve the airport’s competitiveness. It is in the national interest that the airport’s competitiveness and continued development are ensured. Swedavia, other social actors and Sweden as a country need to act together, says Jonas Abrahamsson.

Some of the most important events in 2023:

• More than 32 million people flew from one of Swedavia's ten airports last year. This is an increase of 17 percent compared to 2022. Although air freight only makes up one percent of global transport volumes, it accounts for 35 percent of the value of goods in a normal year.
• During the summer, Stockholm Arlanda Airport's new, more efficient and faster security checkpoint at Terminal 5 was inaugurated. The investment. The EU-certified equipment allows travelers to keep liquids and electronics in their hand luggage throughout the security checkpoint.
• The 11,000 square meter Marknadsplatsen with approximately 50 restaurant and retail concepts was inaugurated in October and is the largest commercial venture ever at Sweden's largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The stores are exposed to approximately 60,000–100,000 travelers per day, or 23 million travelers per year.
• In 2024, the collaboration with Swedavia's customers and partners for fossil-free aviation will continue. This year will be the fifth year in a row that Swedavia has implemented an incentive program for increased use of renewable aviation fuel. The program means that Swedavia will reimburse up to half of the cost of refueling with renewable aviation fuel. • Fossil-free aviation also requires technical innovation. During the past year, Swedavia has intensified its work to prepare the company's ten airports and promote the development of electric and hydrogen-powered aviation. During the year, we have initiated a collaboration with Heart Aerospace with the aim of demonstrating the turnaround and taxi process of a full-scale mockup of the ES30 aircraft model at Malmö Airport.
• Furthermore, Swedavia has now formed a collaboration with Airbus, Vattenfall and SAS, among others, to more deeply analyze and understand what is required to create the conditions for hydrogen for aviation at our Swedish airports. Collaborations like these between industry players from all parts of the value chain are also crucial for aviation's climate transition.
• In November, a hybrid bond of two billion kronor was issued. Interest from the capital market was very high, mainly from institutional investors but also from the Nordic countries, and combined with the large oversubscription, it is proof of Swedavia's strong position among investors in the Nordic region.
