Overall, air travel increased by eight percent during the month compared to August 2022. The development is driven by continued strong demand for European travel, although the pace slowed somewhat in August. The recovery is expected to continue during the autumn, but may be affected by uncertainty factors such as weaker economic development and uncertain economic conditions.
-When we sum up the summer, we can state that our airports have had the privilege of welcoming over nine million travelers and also a growing number of foreign visitors. Our operational delivery has generally been good at all ten airports. The new security check at Arlanda has contributed to a significantly smoother experience for our travelers and since the opening, over 1.6 million have passed through with an average queue time of approximately 5 minutes. At the beginning of autumn, we look forward to starting to welcome our travelers to Arlanda's new 11,000 square meter marketplace with a new commercial offering, says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's CEO and Group Chief Executive.
-We see continued strong demand for travel to Europe in particular, and airlines continue to develop their traffic programs and add new traffic to our airports. Demand has increased at a faster rate than supply despite an unsettled environment with weak economic development, and the industry's overall assessment is that the recovery will likely continue during the autumn, albeit at a somewhat slower rate. However, uncertainty is greater in the near future, even though we have so far been able to establish that there is a continued strong desire to travel, both privately and for work, says Jonas Abrahamsson.
Swedavia's ten airports offered nearly 300 destinations during the summer and at Stockholm Arlanda, the range of destinations is now largely back to what it was before the pandemic. In August, Florence, Aarhus, Larnaca opened with SAS via Arlanda. In September, Beirut opens from Arlanda with Eurowings.
A total of just over 3 million travelers traveled through Swedavia's airports during August, which is an increase of 8 percent compared to August 2022 and thus represents 82 percent of travel before the pandemic in 2019. International travel increased by 12 percent while domestic travel decreased by 4 percent in August compared to August last year.
The development continues to be primarily driven by increased international travel via Stockholm Arlanda Airport. International travel increased overall by 12 percent to just over 2.4 million travelers compared to August last year, while domestic travel decreased by 4 percent to just over 600,000 travelers.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport had just over 2.1 million passengers during the month. This is an increase of 10 percent compared to August last year. International travel increased by 12 percent during the month of August, while domestic travel decreased by 1 percent compared to August last year.
Gothenburg Landvetter Airport had just over 500,000 travelers during August, an increase of 8 percent compared to August 2022. International travel developed by 12 percent during the month while domestic travel decreased by 18 percent compared to August 2022.
Other Swedavia airports had a varied development. Among the regional airports, Luleå Airport, Kiruna Airport and Umeå Airport had the strongest development during the month, while Åre Östersund, Bromma Stockholm Airport and Malmö Airport had a weaker development during the month.
