The recovery of aviation continues in May and summer travel is now picking up. In May, Swedavia's airports had over 3 million passengers in a single month for the first time since the start of the pandemic. This is an increase of 14 percent compared to May last year and corresponds to 83 percent of the levels before the pandemic. Demand for international travel within Europe remains strong and the development is driven by the airlines' investments in strengthened accessibility via primarily Stockholm Arlanda Airport. In connection with the Ascension weekend, Arlanda reached the highest passenger level for a single day since the start of the pandemic with over 40,000 departing passengers.
– The recovery in aviation continues during May and many people are prioritizing travel despite a slightly weaker economic situation. The development is now also driven by the fact that summer travel has picked up considerably and there is, above all, a high demand for international travel within Europe. At Swedavia, we are of course very pleased that in May we had the privilege of welcoming more than 3 million travelers in a single month at our ten airports, says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's President and CEO.
– At several of our airports, travel is now approaching the levels we had before the pandemic. This applies to Arlanda but also to several of our regional airports, all of which are very important for ensuring good accessibility throughout the country. The booking situation shows that many are looking forward to their summer travel and we expect a continued travel-intensive summer period at our airports, says Jonas Abrahamsson.
In May, Stockholm Arlanda Airport welcomed both Royal Jordanian's establishment with a direct route to Amman and United's direct route to New York. These investments strengthen Swedish accessibility to the Middle East and the USA, respectively.
This year's summer traffic program is characterized by strengthened accessibility to both Europe and the USA. In total, Swedavia's airports offer over 300 destinations this summer. This corresponds to just over 90 percent of the destination range before the pandemic, which is now back.

In total, just over 3 million passengers travelled via Swedavia's airports during May, which is an increase of 14 percent compared to May 2022 and 83 percent of the pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The development is primarily driven by increased international travel via Stockholm Arlanda Airport and the airlines' continued investments in new flight routes and air traffic via Swedavia's airports. International travel increased by 17 percent to 2.2 million compared to May, while domestic travel increased by 9 percent to just over 800,000.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport had just over 2 million passengers in May. This is an increase of 16 percent compared to May last year and 89 percent of pre-pandemic levels. International travel increased by 18 percent to almost 2 million compared to May 2022, while domestic travel increased by 10 percent to 350,000 passengers.
Gothenburg Landvetter Airport had nearly 500,000 travelers in May, an increase of 14 percent compared to May last year and 81 percent of pre-pandemic levels. International travel increased by 13 percent and domestic travel increased by 15 percent compared to May last year.
Malmö Airport had 134,000 travelers during May, which is an increase of 1 percent compared to May last year and 68 percent of pre-pandemic levels. International travel decreased by 2 percent compared to May last year, while domestic travel increased by 4 percent.
Bromma Stockholm Airport had 127,000 travelers during May, an increase of 14 percent compared to May 2022 and 53 percent of 2019 levels. International travel increased by 58 percent to 21,000 travelers, while domestic travel increased by 9 percent to 106,000 travelers.
Air travel at Swedavia airports and the other six regional airports had a large variation in development during May. Åre Östersund Airport, Umeå Airport and Ronneby Airport were the regional airports with the strongest passenger development during the month. Luleå Airport and Kiruna Airport performed best in May compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
