Autumn air travel has gotten off to a solid start, driven by strong demand for international flights that is continuing, primarily within Europe. During the month, nearly three million passengers flew via Swedavia's airports, an increase of five percent compared to September last year.
The big news this autumn regarding airline establishment and new routes includes the airline Wizzair, which has chosen to establish itself at Stockholm Arlanda and in connection with this, two flight routes will start via Arlanda to Budapest and Gdansk, respectively, starting at the end of October. In September, Eurowings began flying between Arlanda and Beirut. Ryanair plans to open three new international routes between Arlanda and Tirana, Marrakesh and Paris during October. At Luleå Airport, Detur will open autumn holiday charters to Chania at the end of the month.
A total of nearly 3 million passengers travelled via Swedavia's airports in September, which is an increase of 5 percent compared to September 2022 and represents 80 percent of travel before the pandemic, in 2019. The development continues to be primarily driven by increased international travel via Sweden's largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport. International travel increased overall by 8 percent to just over 2 million passengers compared to September last year, while domestic travel decreased by 5 percent to just over 740,000 passengers.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport had nearly 2 million passengers during the month, an increase of 6 percent compared to September last year. International travel increased by 8 percent to nearly 1.7 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased by 2 percent to just over 300,000 passengers.
Gothenburg Landvetter Airport had nearly 500,000 travelers during September, an increase of 8 percent compared to September last year. International travel increased by 11 percent to just over 400,000 travelers while domestic travel decreased by 12 percent to just over 57,000 travelers.
Other Swedavia airports had a varied development during September. Travel at Malmö Airport and Bromma Stockholm Airport had a weaker development, driven by a slightly reduced domestic travel during September, and the number of travelers decreased by 9 percent and 10 percent respectively compared to September last year.
Visby Airport and Åre Östersund Airport are the regional Swedavia airports that had the best passenger development during September compared to September last year. Luleå Airport is also the airport that had the best traffic development compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
