At midnight, minus 34.5 degrees Celsius was measured in Nikkaluokta, which was the lowest temperature in Europe. Now the cold is expected to move south and it may be high time to change to winter tires.
– The forecasts show that we could have winter throughout the country at the beginning of next week, says SVT's meteorologist Ebba Mårtensson.
On Sunday morning, the temperature in Nikkaluokta dropped a few more degrees to minus 37.4 degrees, and continued cold temperatures are expected in the northern parts of the country in the coming days.
– It is not unusual for Sweden to have the coldest temperature in Europe. The cold air in the north will move south during the night to Monday and there will be freezing temperatures in large parts of the country, SVT's meteorologist Ebba Mårtensson.
Two decimeters of snow expected
Two snow storms will pass through Götaland early next week and around two decimeters of white precipitation is expected to fall.
– Most of the precipitation will end up in Götaland. It is difficult to say exactly when it will arrive and whether it means that the whole country will be covered in snow. But sometime at the beginning of next week we may have winter throughout the country.
The two snowstorms are coming from the west.
– They will pass quickly and this contributes to drift formations, which can cause problems.
Can get slippery on the roads
SMHI said that Skåne and Blekinge could experience snow slush and slippery traffic on Sunday. But SMHI has reduced the warnings somewhat. Winter tires will not be required for winter road conditions until Wednesday, but it may be a good idea to change before then. On Monday, there may be problems on the roads in southern Sweden.
– Since it gets wet during the evening and night, and then freezes during the night, the roads may become slippery tomorrow.
