On June 5th at 9:24 PM Swedish time, a historic moment awaits! A small red house – a classic Swedish cottage with white knots – is planned to become the first house in the world to land on the moon. After more than four months of travel through space, the artwork The Moonhouse now entering its most critical phase: a controlled landing in Mare Frigoris – the Sea of Cold.
From Västerås to the moon
It started as a dream in Vasteras back in 1999 when artist Mikael Genberg had the idea to place a classic red house with white knots on the moon. Now, 26 years later, the historic day is here when the little house will be the first ever to land on the moon.
The Moonhouse, a work created by Mikael Genberg and part of the Japanese space mission ispace has traveled through space for over four months. The small house will sit on the front of the TENACIOUS rover and once the RESILIENCE lander has reached the lunar surface, the rover will roll out to find the perfect spot for the house. The project requires extreme precision and even with a successful landing, the most critical moment remains when the house is released onto the moon, a drop of just eight centimeters, driven solely by gravity.
