Tourism is declining in Thailand. Now the Swedish favorite is luring tourists with free flight tickets, writes Economic Times.

Thai authorities had expected 39 million foreign visitors this year, but have now downgraded the forecast to 33 million, Reuters reports. 

From January to mid-August this year, 20.8 million international arrivals were recorded, a seven percent decrease from last year. 

Euro News states that violent incidents in Bangkok and border unrest with Cambodia have contributed to a deterioration in the impression of Thailand as a safe holiday destination.

200,000 can get free flight

Now, Thai authorities are planning to launch a campaign to give 200,000 international tourists a free domestic round-trip flight. The goal is to encourage tourists to choose to travel to less visited destinations in the country, rather than just the most well-known destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai.

The offer is valid for new bookings made through airlines or travel agents from September to November 2025. Participating airlines are Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet. Only travelers arriving in the country by air are eligible to take advantage of the offer.

The authorities are now awaiting final approval from the government regarding the campaign.
