Several Swedish beaches and harbors are being honored by the Blue Flag organization. This year, the flag will be hoisted at eight beaches and thirteen harbors.
The Blue Flag award is given to beaches, marinas and tourist boats that meet criteria in the areas of water quality, environment, education, safety and accessibility.
This year, three Swedish municipalities stand out: Helsingborg, Varberg and Vellinge. They have all received several awards each.
– Ports and beaches that have the Blue Flag work to improve environmental and sustainability performance within their own operations and make it easier for individuals to take responsibility for nature and the environment, says Henrik Alsén, responsible for the Blue Flag in Sweden.
Among other things, this could involve offering information about consideration for animals and nature, offering eco-labeled products or facilitating waste management.
The Blue Flag is an international award, available at over 5,000 facilities in 51 countries. The award must be applied for again each year, and a jury decides where the flag will be hoisted.
