The shipping company Tallink Silja, which operates the well-known Silja Line ferries, is laying off approximately half of its employees in Sweden – 450 people.
Passenger numbers in April fell by 96 percent compared to the same month in 2019, Tallink Silja writes in a press release.
– The economic consequences of the travel restrictions are devastating for passenger ferry traffic and it is now clear that we will only be able to operate on a limited basis for a long time to come. We therefore have no other choice but to significantly reduce the organization and lay off large parts of the crew on board our ships, says Marcus Risberg, CEO of Tallink Silja AB, in the press release.
Management will now negotiate with the relevant unions.
Tallink Silja appeals to the Riksdag and government for changes to the Maritime Support Act.
– So that we don't have to give further notice and can retain the remaining staff, says Marcus Risberg.
