The Spanish island of Tenerife has been hit by a massive power outage. The entire island, with around 900,000 inhabitants and a significant number of tourists, was left without electricity, reports the newspaper El País.
The power outage occurred on Sunday afternoon. By early evening, power had begun to return to some areas and tram service had resumed. Authorities expect it could take up to twelve hours for everyone to have power restored.
The emergency services received many calls and firefighters made around 70 calls to help people stuck in elevators.
Tenerife's two airports and hospitals have backup power and survived, as did the largest hotels on the island.
Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica is investigating the cause of the power outage.
