Tesla is seeking approval to offer taxi services in California. The electric car maker applied late last year for a so-called ”transportation charter-party carrier” permit from the California Public Service Commission, according to documents obtained by Bloomberg News.

The classification means that Tesla would own and control the vehicle fleet.

The company has announced that it will launch this type of service, which will also mean that it will compete with other similar players such as Uber Technologies, Lyft and Waymo.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that they will release a driverless taxi service in Austin in June and that they will then also launch this in California.
