Scandinavia is back on Thai Airways' route map and Kastrup will be the first destination. Stockholm remains behind when long-haul traffic restarts.

Copenhagen will be the first destination in Scandinavia when Thai Airways restarts some of its intercontinental traffic on July 2. The first destination to open to foreign tourists is Phuket and, in addition to Kastrup, Thai will begin flying to Zurich, London, Paris and Frankfurt. 
The flights will be a loop that goes from Bangkok via Phuket to the destination in Europe and the same loop back. To Copenhagen and Frankfurt, Thai will deploy an A350-900, to Zurich and Paris a B787-8 and to London a B777-300ER. 

This means that Arlanda still has a very controlled range of long-haul routes, despite the restart among airlines. Currently, it is back to the previous system where Kastrup was the hub in Scandinavia with feeder traffic from Stockholm and Oslo. This applies largely to the airlines that are part of the Star Alliance that choose Copenhagen in the first stage of the restart, most recently Thai Airways and before that, among others, Singapore Airlines. 
Arlanda currently has four intercontinental routes that have been maintained in principle throughout the pandemic: 
Qatar to Doha, up to 10 departures per week 
Emirates to Dubai, four departures a week 
Ethiopian to Addis Ababa, four departures a week 
Air China to Beijing, two departures a week All four airlines expect to be able to increase the number of frequencies as soon as the market allows. Close contact with market developments also applies to All Nippon Airways, which was ready with a route from Tokyo to Stockholm when Covid-19 paralyzed all air traffic. 
– They are still determined to start flying to Stockholm, but of course must wait and see how travel develops, says Elisabeth Axtelius, Head of Aviation Business at Swedavia to Flygtorget.
