Thailand is still one of the most popular winter travel destinations, but there are a few things you should know ahead of this year's season. Following the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit in October, the country is in official mourning.
The Thai government has urged the population to show respect during a 90-day mourning period that will last until January 22, 2026. In the meantime, Thais are expected to wear muted colors and avoid festive events – and tourists are also advised to exercise some caution.
In practice, this is mainly noticeable in the fact that certain festivals and events may be cancelled, postponed or held in a more toned-down form than usual. Nightlife in places like Bangkok and Phuket will continue, but the atmosphere may be somewhat calmer than usual.
“For tourists, it's mainly about showing respect in public settings during the mourning period. Otherwise, the country is operating as usual,” says Tiyoneh Jah, PR and communications manager at travel agency Ticket.
According to travel agency Ticket, interest in Thailand has increased significantly ahead of this year's winter season. Bookings to the country are 22 percent higher than during the same period last year, and Phuket, Krabi and Bangkok are among the most booked destinations this winter.
