Thailand is changing its visa-free entry rules from September 15, 2026. For Swedish travelers, the visa-free stay will be shortened from 60 to 30 days. The same 30-day rule applies to travelers from other Nordic countries, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The change means that the general possibility of a 60-day visa-free stay, which was introduced in July 2024, will end.
Under the new rules, passport holders from 60 countries and territories can travel to Thailand without a visa for tourist purposes for up to 30 days. Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway are included in that group.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand, TAT, states that the changes will take effect from September 15 after the Thai Ministry of Interior's new regulations were published in the Royal Gazette on August 31.
From 60 to 30 days for Swedes
For Swedish tourists, the most important change is that the visa-free period is halved from 60 to 30 days.
Travelers planning to stay longer therefore need to check which visa or other entry requirements apply to the trip in question.
The new model contains different rules depending on the traveler's nationality. In addition to the 30-day visa exemption, there are 15-day rules, Visa on Arrival, and special bilateral agreements.
According to TAT, such agreements may entail visa-free stays of 90, 30 or 14 days for certain nationalities.
Restrictions on entry across land borders
The new rules also include a restriction for travelers using the 30-day visa-free entry period when entering Thailand's land borders.
According to TAT, such visa-free entry may, as a general rule, be used a maximum of twice per calendar year.
For Swedish travelers, the provision may be important on round trips where Thailand is combined with neighboring countries and the land border is crossed several times.
TAT recommends checking before travel
The Tourism Authority of Thailand recommends that travelers check current regulations with Thai authorities, embassies or consulates before departure.
This applies especially to stays longer than 30 days, repeated border crossings or trips that include several countries.
The new rules apply from September 15, 2026.
