Denali National Park in Alaska attracts tourists with its rich wildlife and snow-capped mountain peaks, with North America's highest mountain, Denali (formerly Mount McKinley), taking center stage.

A large part of the park is now closed for the summer season – several weeks earlier than planned. The reason is that the mountain slopes along the road to the park have thawed unusually much, increasing the risk of landslides.

Gradual but persistent movements in the ground have made it treacherous to travel on the approximately 150-kilometer-long access road.

”The changing climate is causing the frozen ground to thaw, resulting in unpredictable and increasing ground movements at Pretty Rocks,” said park superintendent Don Striker in a statement.

Similar movements have never before occurred along the road to the park, he says.
