American Airlines will not operate flights with the crashed Boeing 737 Max model during the summer, CNBC reports.

The airline thus joins competitor Southwest Airlines, which has also announced that it will not operate flights with the model during the summer.

American Airlines will keep the plane grounded until August 19. The aircraft model has been grounded since mid-March, and it is unclear when it will be allowed to take off again.

Boeing has announced that it is cutting production of aircraft in the 737 Max program, which has been involved in two accidents in a short period of time. The company's stock has fallen more than 10 percent on the stock exchange since the crash in Ethiopia in March. 

The low-cost airline Norwegian has 18 Boeing 737 Max 8 planes in its fleet, but SAS does not have any.
