Airline American Airlines is to reduce its workforce by 19,000 employees in an attempt to manage the reduced demand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The news agency Dow Jones reports.

The cutbacks, combined with retirements and temporary layoffs, will make the company approximately 30 percent smaller than it was in March of this year. Among those affected are 17,500 pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, and others, as well as 1,500 in administration and management.
