The death toll in Lisbon rises to 17 after the fatal crash, local authorities said, according to Sky News.

It was on Wednesday evening that the 265-meter-long funicular railway turned into a death trap when one of the carriages suddenly derailed and crashed into a building. About 20 people were injured.

Thursday has been declared a national day of mourning in Portugal.
