It was delayed, but now the 13-meter-high Christmas goat in Gävle is in place and inaugurated, after a total of 1,000 working hours – for the 59th time in a row.
But: Can the goat be left alone? The Gävle goat has been burned down 30 times, and during the entire 1970s and 1980s it only stood untouched for two years. In 1970 it burned down just six hours after its inauguration – and in 1979 before it was even set up. One year a garbage truck crashed into Gävle's pride, and in 2023 a flock of jackdaws ate large parts of the straw goat.
– I hope no pickpockets will drive into it, and no jackdaws will eat it. I bet it will be left out all the time, says municipal councilor Jan Myléus (KD), to Swedish Radio in Gävleborg.
It rained heavily during the opening, so today it was difficult to light the fire.
However, not everyone is hopeful for the goat's survival.
In an interview with Swedish Radio in Gävleborg, a hopeful resident says:
– I want it to stay for a while and then I would like it to burn.
