Two flights from Luleå Airport have been cancelled due to snowfall and strong winds. SMHI has issued four class 1 warnings for snowfall in Norrbotten and Västerbotten. Inland, there could be up to three decimetres of snow in some places.
The first major snowfall of the season in Sweden has had major consequences in Norrbotten and Västerbotten. Two flights that were due to take off from Luleå on Sunday evening had to be cancelled and turned back to Stockholm.
Another flight to Pajala is scheduled for the evening and travelers are advised to stay updated on any changes. Umeå Airport, however, has not been affected as badly, with traffic operating as planned during the day and evening.
Four class 1 warnings for snowfall have been issued by SMHI, all in the inland and coastal areas of Norrbotten and Västerbotten. In connection with the snowstorm, it may also be windy in some places, with occasional strong gusts.
”It can cause a little drift,” says Max Lindberg Stoltz, meteorologist at SMHI.
The most snow is expected in the inland of Norrbotten, mainly in the eastern parts, where it could locally reach up to three decimeters. Snowstorms are also expected in the inland of Västerbotten.
”"The snowfall will subside from the south during the night. But there may still be some isolated snow showers on Monday in northern Norrland," says Max Lindberg Stoltz.
SMHI has also issued class 1 warnings for gales in the Baltic Sea, from the southern Baltic Sea up to the Gulf of Bothnia. This includes the entire Swedish south and east coast.
The forecast for the amount of snow along the coast is somewhat uncertain, SMHI says.
With that, around a decimeter of snow or more is expected on the Norrbotten coast until Monday night. The same applies to the coastal region of Västerbotten.
Anyone who lives in the affected snow areas and will be driving should switch to winter tires and drive carefully, as visibility in traffic may be reduced.
Occasional snow showers have also moved in over Jämtland, Dalarna and Gävleborg on Sunday, says Max Lindberg Stoltz, but during the day the snowfall will subside and the weather will clear up.
”"The weather will be calmer in the rest of Sweden. Sunny throughout the day," says Max Lindberg Stoltz.
The temperature is above freezing in most of the country. In parts of northern Norrland and in the mountain areas, sub-zero temperatures are expected.
”"We'll see how the temperature develops. The lowest temperature of the season so far is 9 degrees below zero. It's not entirely impossible that it will hit today, presumably in the Norrbotten Mountains or the northern Lapland Mountains," says Max Lindberg Stoltz.
Monday offers a calm start to the week weather-wise with a lot of sun around the country.
”"On Tuesday, a fairly wet period begins. During the night towards Tuesday, an area of rain will move in from the southwest, initially over the western parts of Götaland and Svealand. It will spread northward throughout Tuesday and into Wednesday."”
The rain may contain elements of snow in parts of Värmland, Örebro County, Västmanland and Uppland on Tuesday.
”There will probably also be some snowflakes in Stockholm,” says Max Lindberg Stoltz.
