The fire at the Gävle Bocken started at 3:35 a.m. on Friday night. The emergency services were called to Slottstorget, but shortly afterwards only a smoking structure remained at the scene.

Witnesses saw a tall, athletic man in dark clothing leave the scene as the fire started. Witnesses became suspicious when the man changed clothes near the trestle.

He reportedly said he “didn’t have a lighter” when he was confronted, the police said on their website.

A man in his 40s with a similar description and soot all over his hands was arrested at the scene by police.

It was the first time since 2016 that the goat did not survive Christmas. The goat has burned most years since the 1960s.
