The Leaning Tower of Pisa has been stabilized and even straightened slightly, announces the control group that has been overseeing the restoration of the campanile, which began construction in 1173, for 17 years.

According to technical expert Nunziante Squeglia, a professor at the University of Pisa, the 57-meter-high tower has been straightened by four centimeters thanks to the engineers' actions, Italian media reports.

In January 1990, the white marble tower was closed because of the steep slope — 4.5 meters from the vertical — due to the danger. A collapse within 20 years was predicted. But a rescue operation reduced the slope by 40 centimeters
