The infrastructure minister, Andreas Carlsson (Christian Democrats), responds to criticism following the recent enormous disruptions to train services. He states that thunderstorms, solar creep, and trespassing on the tracks are behind the train chaos – but also extensive lack of maintenance.

– The railway has been maintained very poorly for decades while train traffic has increased. Then I think many understand that problems will arise, he says on P1 Morgon on Tuesday.

Andreas Carlsson believes that the maintenance debt has been allowed to grow for decades – but that the government is now working to pay it off.

"What we are doing now is turning the trend and investing more in maintenance," he says, adding that the government is making record investments in the railway.

– This year, 1,700 maintenance jobs are planned. That's a new record. There has never been as much maintenance carried out as this year, says Andreas Carlsson
