In September 2017, Swedavia broke ground on the largest expansion in Gothenburg Landvetter Airport's history.

Today, another big step has been taken towards what will become the airport and Airport City Gothenburg of the future.

The official start of the Terminal Expansion North project took place on Tuesday, meaning that construction is now underway on both the north and south sides of the terminal at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. Terminal Expansion North includes preparations for a new, shared security checkpoint, a new baggage cellar that accommodates larger X-ray equipment, and an environmentally certified, seven-story hotel near the terminal that will be operated by Scandic.

– We continue to develop the future Gothenburg Landvetter Airport as West Sweden's gateway to the world, and we can do much of that thanks to great collaborations with players in the region. The hotel is an important piece of the puzzle as the public hotel areas will be integrated with the future check-in hall. The airport's expansion is necessary to meet the needs of future travelers, says Jonas Abrahamsson, President and CEO of Swedavia.

Instead of a traditional groundbreaking ceremony, Swedavia, contractor Peab and hotel operator Scandic each placed an object for the future in a time capsule. The capsule will be cast into the new terminal building later.

Hotel operator Scandic chose to put up a water bottle made of recycled glass and a text about how they view sustainability.

The contractor Peab's contribution to the capsule is an engraved and massive handshake in bronze. The handshake has always had great value for Peab and is the symbol that they keep their promises. In this case, the promise stands for, among other things, that they build with a focus on the environment and people and put the safety of staff and airport visitors first.
