The number of Swedes living abroad continues to increase.
Despite Brexit and the pandemic, the number of Swedes living abroad is estimated to have increased by approximately 25,000 since 2015 – and is now approaching 700,000.
The organization Swedes Around the World conducts regular surveys of the number of Swedes living abroad. Despite years of pandemic, moving to other countries is still popular.
Seven years ago Then – when the survey was last carried out – 660,000 Swedes were estimated to live abroad; in 2022, that figure has risen to 685,000.
”One of the reasons is of course that we have become more Swedes during the period, but there are also other reasons,” says Cecilia Borglin, secretary general of Swedes Around the World.
”"In our survey, we asked 10,000 people why they chose to move. Many did it for love or to live in a different climate.".
The three countries hosting the most Swedes in 2022 are the USA, Spain and the UK. Despite the latter country's withdrawal from the EU, the migration flow from Sweden has not stopped. 10,000 more Swedes live in the UK today compared to seven years ago.
”"It can be stated that the UK is a large country that attracts many Swedes, despite Brexit. Above all, many are moving to London," says Cecilia Borglin.
”"The USA remains at the top for where most people choose to live, but we can also see that many people choose to settle in Europe and close to Sweden.".
The data Data collected by Swedes around the world indicates that the number of international students has decreased over the past seven-year period.
”"It is something that stands out, that the number of students has decreased. It is a trend we hope will be broken because it could mean problems for Sweden. It is important for us as a country that people gain international experience," says Cecilia Borglin.
