Sweden is "absolutely not ruling out" introducing requirements for PCR tests for entry into Sweden, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said at a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the EU summit on Wednesday-Thursday.
”"I understand that many EU countries are choosing to supplement Covid passport requirements with PCR tests in this situation with increased spread of infection," she said.
Italy, Portugal, Ireland and Bulgaria have just introduced requirements for a negative PCR test in addition to a Covid passport for entry.
In response to a question, Magdalena Andersson said that she "absolutely does not rule out" that Sweden will also introduce requirements for PCR tests.
The spread of the infection differs significantly in different EU countries. The EU summit is therefore not expected to be able to agree on common travel rules within the EU.
On Wednesday, the The European Union's disease control agency ECDC has tightened restrictions due to increased spread of the virus.
Face masks should be used, large gatherings should be avoided and remote working should be encouraged, the ECDC said.
Furthermore, hospitals should increase their capacity to treat an increased number of cases.
