This summer, for the first time, you can travel directly by night train between Sweden and Austria. The fast train is now starting a departure in the middle of summer as a response to the successful initiative with increased traffic during the winter season. The extended winter season resulted in a 52 percent increase in the number of train passengers to Austria.
For the first time ever, Snälltåget will operate a direct train between Sweden and Austria during the summer. Board in Malmö in the afternoon and arrive in the Austrian Alps in the morning the next day.
”In recent years, we have seen an increased interest in visiting SalzburgerLand during the summer season. It is especially hiking, cycling and activities at the many mountain lakes that attract visitors. For many of our guests, sustainability is an important factor in choosing a holiday and we are therefore pleased that there will be a direct train connection here this summer as well.”, says Yvonne Rosenstatter, head of marketing at SalzburgerLand Tourismus.
After Snälltåget introduced a direct train between Sweden and Austria during the winter season, a passenger increase of 52 percent was seen compared to the previous season. Now Snälltåget is choosing to also focus on the summer season.

The high-speed train's summer departure will leave Malmö for the Austrian Alps on July 22, 2023 and return again on July 30, 2023. The train is powered by water, wind and solar energy and a round trip between Sweden and SalzburgerLand results in emissions of approximately 1.2 kg of CO2 per person. For comparison, a flight over the same distance emits approximately 267 kg, while a trip in a petrol-powered station wagon emits approximately 128 kg.
The express train stops at a total of five stations in SalzburgerLand, including in the center of the popular Zell am See-Kaprun area and in St. Johann in Salzburg. Regional bus and train connections also reach other popular destinations such as Saalbach, Leogang, Wagrain-Kleinarl and the Salzburger Saalachtal.
