On hand to celebrate this historic milestone were Minister of Finance Elisabeth Svantesson, Jernhusen CEO Biljana Pehrsson and Jesper Göransson, CEO of Peab. Representatives from the Swedish Transport Administration, Västtrafik and the City of Gothenburg also participated. The new station building will be an addition to the existing central station, and is planned to be completed when Västlänken Station Centralen opens as a sack station in December 2026.  

The start of construction of the new Gothenburg Grand Central station building was celebrated today in a ceremony. The start of construction marks an important step in meeting the increase in passengers expected in the region.  

Minister of Finance Elisabeth Svantesson was on site and took the first symbolic “shovel stroke” with mortar to attach one of the 524,000 recycled bricks that will make up the facade. 

― Sweden needs to be built richer, the economy needs to grow. Gothenburg and Western Sweden are a strong growth engine for the entire country. The power and innovative capacity of the people and companies here is very important for the Swedish economy. Infrastructure plays an important role in the development of the region and the new station building is an important piece of the puzzle in that, says Elisabeth Svantesson, Sweden's Minister of Finance.  

The new station building is a clear example of how Jernhusen, as a specialist in properties near the railway, is working to make it easier for more people to choose the train. Rail-borne traffic offers the highest capacity and enables easy and sustainable travel within cities, regions and the entire country. 

"This is a big day for Gothenburg and Western Sweden. The new station building is a way for Jernhusen to meet the increased train traffic expected in the region. We are very happy to take advantage of the site's potential, contribute to developing the Gothenburg of the future and give more people the opportunity to choose the train," says Biljana Pehrsson, CEO of Jernhusen.  

The construction is being carried out by Peab on behalf of Jernhusen. The project has a strong sustainability focus and a clear ambition to keep the climate footprint low. Jesper Göransson, CEO and President of Peab, was one of the speakers during the construction start celebration.

The new station building will be an entrance to the new, station-close district of Centralstaden Gothenburg. The district includes the new and existing station, the Park Central office building and the recently approved detailed plan north of the central station. The goal is to create an attractive meeting place and get more people to travel by public transport, in a safe and vibrant urban environment. 

Facts about the project:  

• Gothenburg Grand Central is being built by Peab on behalf of Jernhusen and with a contract value of approximately 870 million Swedish kronor. 
• The project was scheduled to start construction in June 2024.  
• The station hall is expected to open at the same time as the West Link at the end of 2026. Occupancy in the offices will take place in 2027. 
• The new station building is being built together with the Nils Ericson Terminal and thus with the existing central station. The building is primarily a station building but houses three upper office floors. 
• The building is being built with a facade made of 100 percent recycled brick, more precisely 524,000 bricks, which is equivalent to 1,772 large pallets coming from Denmark. The color of the brick matches well with the existing central station. 
• With Gothenburg Grand Central we are working to ensure that the offices achieve “Breeam Outstanding”. This is an environmental certification that only about ten other buildings in Sweden live up to today. To succeed, we have optimized the materials in the building parts that affect the climate footprint the most, such as ECO-Concrete, recycled steel, glass, wooden columns and other materials. 
• The building will have several entrances and a station hall measuring around eight meters in height. 15,000 square meters will accommodate a mixed range of stations, services for travelers, shops and restaurants. The three upper office floors, which will be completed in 2027, will have space for around 700 workplaces spread over almost 8,000 square meters. 
• Oslo-based Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter designed the building.
