Nearly one in three Swedish travellers (27%) choose their holiday destination based on the local cuisine, according to a survey carried out by the hotel and travel search site momondo. With a full 40 per cent of the vote, Italy’s pizza and pasta take an undisputed first place in the hearts of Swedes, followed by Greece, the home of feta cheese, and Thailand’s spicy cuisine. Furthermore, search data from momondo reveals that all three destinations rank among the top five most searched-for holiday destinations for summer 2025 by Swedes.

Spanish tapas and sangria may rank sixth among Swedes' favourite cuisines, but Spain still takes first place as the most searched-for destination for summer 2025. Furthermore, seven of the ten most popular cuisines among Swedish travellers are reflected in the list of most searched-for destinations – a sign that the way to a Swedish traveller's heart truly goes through their stomach.

Food has not only become a reason to travel for many Swedes – but also a priority during the trip itself. In our survey, more than three-quarters of Swedes state that food and drink are also what they prefer to spend money on when they are abroad, which underscores how important local flavours are to the travel experience, says Per Christiansen, travel expert at momondo.

The search data is based on flight searches made on momondo.co.uk between 1 June 2024 and 30 October 2024, for departures between 6 June 2025 and 15 September 2025. The search data refers to average return journeys in economy class. Percentages are approximate.
