Venice's leadership wants to tackle mass tourism, which residents say risks destroying the city as garbage piles up and grocery stores close in favor of souvenir shops.

“It's like an amusement park,” says Venice resident Daniela Rossi.

The city of 250,000 has more beds for tourists than for residents. In 2019, before the pandemic, Venice welcomed 30 million visitors. Starting in 2023, the city will test charging entry to anyone who wants to visit the city. Tourists who enter without paying risk hefty fines. But opinions differ among residents about the best cure for mass tourism.
