The US accuses Visa of monopolizing card payments.
Now the Department of Justice is suing the payment card company for violating the country's competition laws, reports the Reuters news agency.
Visa is accused of hindering competition in the market by threatening high fees and paying off potential competitors.
The market manipulation is said to have begun in 2012, according to the authority.
The American company is one of the world's largest payment networks and processes over 60 percent of US payment card transactions, allowing it to charge around $7 billion in fees per year.
