Tokyo will get the world's first self-driving taxi. The premiere will take place today, reports the business newspaper Nikkei.

Robot manufacturer ZMP and taxi company Hinomaru Kotsu are launching the initiative in central Tokyo today. The companies have received support from the city of Tokyo and the project runs until September 8.

The journey will span 5.3 kilometers between Tokyo Station and the Roppongi entertainment district. Passengers will start their journey using an app. The hope is for a full rollout before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Even though the trip is fully automatic, the company will still have a driver in the car for safety reasons.
